this is a hook used primarily for catching whiting, a 4 star fish.
the hook is no bigger than half the size of your pinky finger
when i was 11 i had one of these rigged up to a hand reel fishing off the side of our now lost in a storm tinny. i was with my sister, dad and dad’s dad. they had rods, i had a hand reel.
caught two sharks at the same time and brought them to the surface using that one whiting hook and the hand reel.
not many people can say that on one of their first fishing adventures they caught two sharks at the same time using a a hook designed for small fish.
evidently they were gummy sharks. about six feet long each. the one who took the hook had a friend biting its fin and it did not let go. evan as i pulled them to the surface the second shark never let go of the hooked shark. i figure they were mating.
this was in the very early 2000’s
these sharks were harmless. my sister was the one who stuck her hand in the first sharks mouth to retrieve the hook
three weeks ago a 6 meter great white was spotted at that same spot.
the shark numbers here are increasing dramatically it is quite a worry.
last year whilst at our family beach house i went for a walk to the point to scope the surf. it was overcast, the water was calm apart from the surf rolling through. as i reached the point in one instance at the exact same moment i saw a rainbow, seal and whale all in front of me. it was at this point in time that i decided to not go in the water.
the next day a few hundred meters away on the next beach a bodyboarder was ripped in half by a giant great white.
i respect the ocean immensely, i am afraid of it. yet i feel at home in it and could never not live near it.

i’d listen to this when i was little way before i knew what it was about.
I’ve been lucky enough to see Tom Waits live.
I’ve gotten into the habit of trolling myself when i am drunk.
i was at a mates house two weekends back rather inebriated and i thought it would be a fun idea to put the key to my bike lock on top of a garden stake used for supporting budding trees and what not. i laid it on top and must have forgotten about it immediately.
several hours later whilst organizing my things for departure i checked my pocket and no bike key. i had to literally sit down and think where i would put it if i were to troll myself, after ten to fifteen minutes it dawned on me and i found it, on the steak.
hilarious.
